Shower Bases

Shower bases can also be referred to as shower floors, shower pans and shower trays. Varying in size from compact to custom designed and built, and shape from rectangular to oval. Made from a variety of materials, which will be covered more in-depth, the type, size and shape of the shower base you choose will depend entirely on the space you have available and your budget.

Shower Base Materials

The most common and easily accessible materials for shower bases are acrylic, followed closely by stone resin, but these are not the only types available. Depending on your budget and the style you are looking for, you can have a shower base custom built out of glass, terrazzo, Corian or Balinese teak.

The materials are as limitless as your imagination, but keep in mind that acrylic bases are relatively inexpensive compared to other types, but may not be as sturdy as terrazzo or Corian bases. However, stone bases are heavier and more difficult to install, particularly when it comes to making room for the waste trap, something that is much easier with acrylic bases.

Building your own shower base can be difficult and time consuming if you lack the tools and expertise to get the job done. Most DIY websites will recommend that the inexperienced hire professionals, but if you intend to push ahead and do it yourself, review “how to” sites carefully and talk to professionals. Find out not only what went right, but what went wrong, too. Be prepared to spend time on this project and don’t expect to get it completed in one day.

Installation

When it comes time to install your shower base, it is best to fit and plumb it in before you measure for the enclosure because tiles and tile adhesive can reduce the size of the base by as much as ½ inch. You will need to use a watertight sealant around all the edges of the base and walls to stop any leaks and make sure that it is watertight before you move to the next step.

If you plan to tile over the shower base, there’s a plethora of tiles to choose from, but keep in mind that some tiles will need to be sealed, particularly the natural, porous type, and many tiles can be quite slippery when wet, which can be quite dangerous in the bathroom so take caution when choosing your tiles for installation.
